#1/20 – Your website’s only goal is change

Spencehouse Insight 1/20: Your website's only goal is change

Don’t waste energy increasing the time people spend on your website.

It might be better to move them on ASAP. Here’s why…

What’s the point of your website anyway?

I was struggling to figure this out for myself.

(Which is not ideal when you’re in the business of making websites.)

Like many of my clients, I didn’t have a good answer. What do I want them to do?

  • Book an appointment?

  • Sign up for the newsletter?

  • Pick up the phone?

They’re all good. But which one?

After a lot of mental gymnastics, I couldn’t decide what I wanted to focus on.

And then I remembered. They won’t do anything until they see things differently.

Focus on the change

I don’t want them to read about what I do.

↳ I want them to reimagine what they can do.

I don’t want them to read my blog articles.

↳ I want them to rethink their options.

I don’t want them to read my case studies.

↳ I want them to reframe their problem.

I don’t want them to visit my website.

↳ I want them to hire me.

Basically, I want to create a change in them.

And that’s what your website is for.

So the goal of your website is not for visitors to spend more time.

The goal is for them to see things differently.

How do you do that?

  • Lead with an insight that changes how they see things

  • Make it about them, not you

  • Don’t be generic

Your website’s only goal is change.
