#17/20 – Shorter attention spans are not the problem

Our attention spans have fallen from 12 to 8 seconds since 2000.

But shorter attention spans are not the problem.

  • We spend 3 hours watching Oppenheimer.

  • We binge The Lincoln Lawyer in a night.

  • We watch the Marvel Universe unfold over decades.

The real problem?

In a world of infinite entertainment, people have no patience for irrelevant content.

So what can you do if people aren’t sticking around on your website?

Make your website more relevant to your ideal customer…

  1. Talk to your customers to uncover their true desires

  2. Make your headlines clear and direct (avoid cute and clever)

  3. Add a great big button to make the first step obvious

  4. Describe their pain, so they know you get it

  5. Write as if your audience is 10-years-old

It’s not easy to connect with customers online.

They can be slippery and fickle and hard to pin down.

So it’s up to us to make things so easy, they don’t have to think.

Because they won’t stick around if we’re not relevant.

And that’s why shorter attention spans are not the problem.
