#2/20 – It’s a world wide web of people
“I’m not into computers. I prefer talking to people.”
For day 2 of 20 Website Tips for People People 😊 let’s kill this idea that the web is only for techy people.
Maybe I’m biased since I make websites. People assume I’m a techy person. But I’m not that into the technology. I’m more interested in how people use it. And why.
Is your website any good?
Business owners often tell me their website is terrible. But they’re okay with it because they don’t get clients from it. They prefer talking to people and mostly rely on referrals.
Nothing wrong with that. Don’t stop what you’re doing.
But I do try to remind them that website visitors are people too.
That your people skills—which build rapport and trust with people in real life—can also be baked into your website.
And that you should find out what people are saying when they recommend you and drop it straight onto your homepage.
Old-fashioned people skills
I like Gary V’s insight that our great-great-grandparents were probably more ready for the current digital age than we are.
Because they understood the value of relationships and community better than most of us.
And because if they ran a fruit shop, they knew success wasn’t about the price of carrots. It was built on the little things, like sharing a slice of apple with little Timmy and carrying Old Mrs Murphy’s box of produce to her car.
Those people skills like empathy, patience and generosity work online too.
The web has come a long way
We’re well past the time when you needed to understand coding to make a website.
Just like you don’t need to understand electrical currents to use an oven:
Get fresh ingredients and a good recipe. Then make something delicious for your friends and family to enjoy. (No one cares about your oven.)
It’s not about the tech
They say there will be 38.6 billion devices online by 2025. 50 billion by 2030. 🤯
Most likely, half of those devices will be phones in people’s hands.
So you might ask yourself…
Who’s holding that phone, looking at your website?
Why did they really come looking for you?
Do you want to talk about the technology that got them here?
Or do you want to show them that you understand their problem?
And offer them some help?
Yes, the world wide web is a mind-boggling technology.
It’s also simply a world wide web of people.
⚡️ #2/20 Website tips for people people
Every day for 20 days, I’ll aim to share a little insight about websites, what they’re for and how to make better ones.
I make websites for people people.
If you’re a people person, I hope it makes you think differently about your website.
