#8/20 – Write how you talk in real life

Great writing will take your website to another level

Here are 5 ways to elevate the words on your website. 👇

Hire an actual human copywriter

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a proper writer transform the vibe. Incredible stuff.

Yes, they still exist.

Yes, they’re totally worth it.

Talk to your customers and insert their words in your writing

Send out a Google survey, book a few interviews, or just have a chat.

Take note of any common themes that come up so you can address them.

Use the exact words and phrases they use on your website.

Record yourself talking, then transcribe it

Hit record on your phone and start talking like you’re telling a friend.

Don’t look at the camera if you feel weird. You only need the audio.

Transcribe it exactly. Don’t be tempted to add posh words.

Write to one person only

Sometimes, we generalise and dumb it down to appeal to ‘everyone’.

This makes the writing vague and dull.

Instead, write for one real-life customer. It’s okay if it’s irrelevant to everyone else.

Ask your favourite AI to tweak your original

AI is an excellent tool for polishing, tweaking, and enhancing good ideas.

I don’t expect AI to solve my problems, but I love how it sharpens things up.

My favourite is Claude because it seems to have a bit more swagger.

Before I paste in my version, I brief Claude on the audience, tone, length, style, etc.

The first version is never perfect, but I can get a great result after a few tweaks.
